14th Jan 2013 (自由行 – Miriam Yeung)

The song that I chose for today is “自由行” by Miriam Yeung. The English translation of the title is “Independent travel”.  I guess the title make more sense if I translate as “Backpacking”, but slightly differently to backpacking, these words in Chinese doesn’t need to be low cost (so really, a type of travel that you travel by yourself with your own plan), so that’s why I chose that translation.

The lyrics of the song are about searching for our true love. The protagonist was just ditched by her boyfriend, so she decided to travel around to escape from her usual world. She wishes that she could meet her perfect match in this trip so that she can forget about her ex-boyfriend. But she is worry that even if she had travel around the world she couldn’t find this perfect match that she is looking for and there wouldn’t be a place in the world that she could hide. She tried to calm herself down, telling herself that it doesn’t matter, just treat this trip as a site seeing trip. Every time she travel, she bought two tickets just in case she would find her perfect match and so he could travel with her, but at the end she still travel by herself. The more places she travelled to, the more she worry that she couldn’t find her perfect match, and she realised that all these traveling at the end might indicate to her that her perfect match doesn’t exist in the world and destroy the last bit of naivety in her. So at the end she travel back home and sit for a while, she said perhaps we just need to wait for our true love, and if it is true love, even if we do nothing it would still come to us. Hope you will like the song.
